ACSC/APF 2015 Strengthening Democracy in Asia and COD Final Report

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – The ASEAN Civil Society Conference/ ASEAN People’s Forum (ACSC/APF) 2015 was held from March 22-24, 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In partnership with SEACA and FORUM-ASIA, ADN held an inter-regional workshop “Strengthening Democracy in Asia and the Role of the Community of Democracies.” Facing the trends of weakening democracy in the region of Asia, human rights defenders and activists from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Cambodia shared their challenges to democracy and defending human rights. Given these challenges, the workshop attempted to highlight the role of international community such as Community of Democracies in protecting civil society space in Asia.

Participants expressed the need to increase the inter-regional dialogue in the region of Asia. The common challenges to their activism in defending human rights and democracy are shrinking civil society space, ethnic conflict, and weak governance.
