In Commemoration of the 30th Anniversary
of the Philippine People Power Revolution
February 26, 2016
This year commemorates the 30th anniversary of the People Power Revolution in 1986 that peacefully overthrew the authoritarian government by stirring the international audience. The Asia Democracy Network commemorates the triumphant democratic achievement and contribution to precedent in the Asian region by the people of the Philippines.
The 30th anniversary of the end of the ruthless dictatorship reaffirms the power of the people and resistance which is the legacy of the People Power Revolution. For South Korea, Burma/Myanmar, and Indonesia, the February mass movement in the Philippines became a true inspiration in bringing change peacefully and leading an end to the oppressive regime.
The People Power Movement proved that collective action through solidarity can bring real change. With the upcoming presidential election scheduled for May, we call for the public, private and civil society actors representing different groups of interests in the country to play each role with full accountability in ensuring free and fair elections, defending democratic processes, and ensuring that people’s needs and demands are heard.
On this occasion, we recognize that there needs to be more effort for the concerned actors to overcome the challenges including the culture of apathy and oblivion, corruption, and lack of impunity and accountability through a process that is inclusive of marginalized communities such as youth, indigenous, migrants, and LGBTQ groups.
The ADN further hopes to partner in creating a space in preserving the spirit and legacy of the Philippine People Power movement and addressing concerns on democracy and civil society space in the Asian region.
