[Documentary Screening] Me Vang Nha: When Mother’s Away

“We each only have one life to live but if given the choice, I would still do it exactly the same. I hope everyone will soon raise their own voice and fight for their rights so that they can overcome their own fears, and build a better and greater nation.”

These were the last words of Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, also known as the ‘Mother Mushroom’ who is a 39-year-old top blogger in Vietnam, right before she was sentenced to 10 years in prison for “conducting propaganda against the state” in 2016.

Arbitrary arrests and convictions against the dissenting journalists, bloggers and activists who demanded for the freedom of expression and human rights have continued to mount in Vietnam. Mother Mushroom is one of over 100 bloggers and activists jailed who were for criticizing the country’s one-party government for politically controversial issues, such as land confiscation, police brutality, and freedom of expression.

To raise the awareness of the situation in Vietnam, Asia Democracy Network (ADN) and Vietnamese Overseas Initiative for Conscience Empowerment (VOICE) co-organized the screening of a documentary film called “Me Vang Nha: When Mother’s Away.”

Me Vang Nha is a documentary film that follows the life of Mother Mushroom’s mother, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Lan, solely taking care of her two young grandchildren, while they struggle to continue on their lives and support Mother Mushroom after she is sent to prison.

A brief panel discussion about the film with Vietnamese Overseas Initiatives for Conscience Empowerment (VOICE) will be followed shortly after the screening.

We look forward to your interest and participation.
