Seoul, 26 Sept 2018 – The Asia Democracy Network (ADN) congratulates the people of the Maldives in holding peaceful and successful Presidential elections on 23 Sep 2018. It was reported that the election process was overall smooth without any significant obstruction in the principle and technical implementation. The suprising results of the opposition candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, winning 58 percent of the cast ballots have been widely accepted by the people of the Maldives and the greater international community.

Despite the concern of the political crisis that ensued through the suppression of democratic freedom imposed by President Abdulla Yameen, the people of the Maldives expressed their demand for change in a peaceful manner through the casting their ballot.

ADN urges for a peaceful and democratic transition of power. It is vital for the independent democratic institutions, like the Supreme Court, to ensure that the elections results are honored and democratic transition ensured. ADN extends solidarity and support for the return of democracy in the Maldives. ADN also calls on international community closely monitor the unfolding events in the Maldives ensuring for a smooth and peaceful transition of power and political stability in the country.
